Frequently Asked Questions
How do spray tans work?
At the time of your spray tan, you will look tan until your initial rinse. This initial bronzing is not the tan itself, but the bronzer in our solution. This bronzer allows us to spray tan you evenly. It also gives you instant gratification with some color. The tan itself can take 12-24 hours to develop. Spray tans solutions have DHA (Dihydroxyacetone) in them which is a coloring agent that has been found to brown skin. The DHA only interacts with your dead skin cells, which is why spray tans last about one week. The tan fades as your body exfoliates the dead skin cells.
What should I do before my tan?
Exfoliate, wax/shave, and complete any spa treatments (facials, manicures, pedicures, etc.) at least 24 hours before. These can affect your tan if done afterward.
Can I shower before?
Allow at least 4 hours between your shower and spray tan. This allows your pores to close back up and your pH levels to normalize. If you must shower closer to your tan, rinse with cold water, but know that showering too close will affect your tan.
Can I apply products before?
Lotions, creams, oils, deodorant, and other products will create a barrier that the solution cannot penetrate, meaning your tan will not develop ideally. Also, avoid cream cleansers like Dove.
What should I wear?
For your spray tan, we will ask you to dress down to your comfort level (nude, bra, underwear, swimsuit, etc.). We provide disposable underwear and/or bra if you would like. After your spray tan, dark loose clothes are best to avoid any stains. The bronzer in the solution may rub off your clothes.
What should I avoid after my tan?
Avoid doing the following until after your first rinse: dishes, hand washing, sweating, kisses from pets, lotion, make-up, or anything that wets the skin.
When can I shower?
At the time of your spray tan, we will tell you when to rinse. Generally, it is at about 8 hours after, or 1-4 hours for rapid tans. Shower in lukewarm water. Avoid using soap for your initial rinse. If you feel you look streaky after you rinse, get back in the shower and brush the remainder of the bronzer off. Your tan can take up to 24 hours to fully develop, so if you don’t look tan after you rinse, wait.
What products should I use?
There are many products you can use to extend the life of your tan. A gentle gel-based body wash is best. Avoid loofahs or washrags. Moisturize! Use a water-based lotion after you shower to make your tan last. You can use a tan extender every 2-3 days. SUNSCREEN! Spray tans do not contain sunscreen, and will not protect you from sunburn.
What about water?
Make sure you stay hydrated! This helps your skin to stay hydrated which extends your tan. Try to avoid being in the water for long periods of time, or excessive sweating.
